Treating scars from breast augmentations

A breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world.  Women of all ages are changing the way they look and feel about themselves by undergoing this simple and affordable procedure.  However, there are some issues that are left after a breast augmentation that can affect the way your breasts look.

Scarring is a typical side effect of a breast augmentation.  Scarring is caused by the incisions made to insert breast implants during the procedure.  However, there are several ways that women who have had a breast augmentation treat scars, including Vitamin E treatment as well as a silicone sheeting treatment.

Vitamin E treatment has long been one of the most popular ways to treat scars left by a breast augmentation procedure.  However, data from case studies has shown that there is no positive effect that comes directly from using Vitamin E.  According to a study published in Dermatologic Surgery in 1999, there were no visible improvements that came about as a result of using Vitamin E to treat scarring from a breast augmentation.  In fact, in some cases, using Vitamin E actually made the scars worse by producing an excess of collagen, which results in an increase in the height of a scar.

However, silicone sheeting is becoming one of the most popular ways to treat scars.  Silicone sheeting is used to flatten out scars, and help the scar fade away, improving the look of your breasts after a breast augmentation is performed.  Silicone sheeting is believed to flatten the scar due to the pressure from the substance, and not from the substance itself.  However, research has not shown any conclusive evidence of what actually helps the scarring to reduce from silicone sheeting.

Treating scars that are left from a breast augmentation procedure is an important part of recovery.  Patients should take the time to discuss with their doctors the different ways to best treat scars.

Silicone sheeting is a popular and sometimes effective way to reduce the visibility of the scars left behind by a breast augmentation.  Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks that come with any type of treatment designed to reduce the scars and marks on your body.

Enjoy the new look that a breast augmentation can give your body to the fullest.  Follow any directions your doctor gives you for the best results.
